DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.— Police in Daytona Beach on Tuesday arrested 37-year-old Chad Keene in connection with an investigation into the shooting death Tuesday of a 30-year-old woman near Glenview Boulevard in Daytona Beach, authorities said.

Keene has been charged with second-degree murder, not premeditated, and possession of a weapon and ammunition by a convicted felon.

Police responded to the area about noon after they received two reports of shots fired and found Karli Elliott, 30, on the ground covered in blood with a gunshot wound and a male performing CPR, authorities said. She was transported to Halifax Medical Center, where she later died.

A witness at the scene told police that he and his girlfriend, Elliott, got into a verbal altercation. The witness told police that Elliott walked outside the store they were at and made a phone call to a male known to him as "Swiss Cheez," who was later identified by authorities as Keene. The witness said he saw Keene pull out a gun from his waist area and shoot Elliott, authorities said. Two other witnesses said they heard a gunshot, looked outside the window and saw a white male, later identified as Keene, running west on Glenview Boulevard, according to a police report.

One Homady Luger casing was found on the ground in the area of the shooting, authorities said. Police said a search warrant was approved to search Keene's apartment. Although Keene was not there, police found a safe containing Keene's identification and ammunition, authorities said. The type of ammunition found in the apartment was consistent with the type of shell casing found at the scene of the shooting, police said.

At about 6 p.m., a 2014 Kia in which Keene was a passenger was stopped at Nova Road and U.S. 1, police said. Keene was taken into custody at that time, and upon arrest, Keene said to the arresting deputy, "It was an accident," according to the police report.

After being taken to the Daytona Beach Police Department, Keene told police he received a call from Elliott earlier in the day asking him to meet her, according to police. Keene told police he could hear an argument with another male. Keene admitted to police that he was at the scene of the shooting but never admitted to shooting Elliott, police said.

In an abundance of caution, Daytona Beach police called for the lockdown of three nearby schools while they still were searching for Keene — Ortona Elementary, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Riverview Learning Center — but those lockdowns were lifted later in the day. They also shut down roads in the area as the investigation continued but later reopened them, too.
