DELAND, Fla. — Finding places to live continues to be a struggle across Central Florida, as Volusia County leaders take up talk on building affordable housing in a Tuesday morning meeting.

The Volusia County Council has a plan to possibly implement 10 recommendations over the course of five years to get housing programs in the works soon.
After a recent study, the council says lack of housing is a root cause of poverty in the area.
There’s a range of options needed at different price points. People classified as “extremely low income” need to see rent at $633 or less per month, while those considered “low income” could face about $1,300 each month.
Of the recommendations listed, some include:
- Creating a Community Land Trust
- Creating an Affordable Housing Trust Fund
- Creating an Affordable Housing Review Team
- Creating fee waivers, deferrals and density bonuses
- Allowing for zoning requirement changes for affordable housing projects
