BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A new international airline is now flying into the Melbourne Orlando International Airport.
U.K.-based Tui Airways will bring 150,000 British visitors a year to the Space Coast — and with it millions of dollars in economic impacts.
On Tuesday afternoon, the first transatlantic flight landed at the airport.
Several Downtown Melbourne businesses have announced special discounts to get the new international tourists through their doors.
The creativity is being hammered home at downtown Melbourne's Board and Brush.
Leading a workshop is owner Tara Weigner, who left the corporate world and a cubical to start her small business. She says as a creative, it was the right time to share that talent with patrons.
"We encourage the customers to pick the piece of wood, and the side they like," Weigner said.
Her DIY shop has it all — with the overall goal to educate customers about the beauty of raw materials and allow them to create personalized home decor.
Now, there's a new flow of customers flying into the Melbourne area, and with the airport just 10 minutes from downtown, Weigner hopes tourists will book workshops at her creative studio.
Upon landing, each passenger will be given a directory of local businesses that welcomes them with special discounts.
"The more people talk about small businesses downtown, the more we are recognized and seen," Weigner said. "And that's important."
Both the airport and Space Coast Office of Tourism have commissioned a formal study in the coming year to determine the economic impact of the new visitors' spending.
The airport just completed a $72 million terminal renovation and expansion project to accommodate the influx of new travelers.
