VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Emergency road work was completed early Friday and Interstate 95 lanes in both directions were reopened to traffic.

The highway lanes had been closed near State Road 442 since Thursday morning’s five crashes, which left three people dead.

Repairs had to be made to some of the lanes, because of fire damage caused by those crashes. Multiple cars and semi-tractor trailers were completely burned out.

What You Need To Know

At around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, southbound and northbound lanes of I-95 saw multiple crashes near mile marker 244 at Edgewater, FHP’s Lt. Kim Montes said during a press conference Thursday morning.

The northbound side saw four separate crashes involving 11 vehicles. A passenger in one of the vehicles — only identified as a 25-year-old woman — was killed. Many people were injured, including a child who was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and is listed as stable.

The southbound side had one crash that included six vehicles: four semi-tractor trailers, an SUV and a van.

Troopers said Thursday morning’s conditions were bad for drivers early in the morning.

There was almost zero visibility with a mix of fog and smoke from a prescribed burn Wednesday.

A 51-year-old semi driver from Hialeah, Fla., and a 54-year-old Titusville resident driving a 2017 Jeep Renegade were killed,
Montes said. FHP did not identify either man by name.

Tow trucks began removing a semi-tractor trailer that burned in that crash on Thursday afternoon.

Also, a child was injured in the crash.

“Numerous other people were transported, including a child that was airlifted to Arnold Palmer,” said Lt. Kim Montes with the FHP. “That child is stable. Miraculously, when you look at some of these cars in the northbound lanes, there are people that survived that…don’t know how that happened."
