A road sign at the intersection of SR-436, Winter Park Drive and Red Bug Lake Road has David Knapp confused.
What You Need To Know
- A “U-Turn Yield to Right Turn” sign is posted for westbound drivers on Red Bug Lake Road at Winter Park Drive/SR-436
- Drivers ignore the sign and make the U-turn in front of drivers making a right on red from Winter Park Dr
- Seminole County officials say they believe the sign may be “out of place”
- FDOT has final decision on removal of sign
The sign reads “U-Turn Yield to Right Turn.”
Westbound drivers on Red Bug Lake Road, wanting to make a U-turn and head east, must yield — according to the sign — if a northbound driver on Winter Park Drive makes a right turn.
Knapp, who lives in the Casselberry area, thinks the sign should be removed.
“Any red light should not come before a green light,” he said. “I think the U-turns should come first.”
Despite the sign, drivers do the opposite.
“(Drivers) have to wait at the red light longer because they think the U-turn goes first,” he said. “But actually, the U-turn has a sign that says they have to yield to the right turn on red, but I disagree with that. I think any green light should go before any red light.”
Spectrum News 13 brought this sign to the attention of Seminole County.
Charlie Wetzel, the county traffic engineer, said when the Red Bug overpass was first built, there was a "No U-turn" sign. But that made it challenging for drivers to get into the shopping plaza on the southeast corner of the intersection, so the sign was taken down.
“However, the ‘No U-turn’ sign was changed to ‘U-turns must yield to right turns’ instead of just being removed,” Wetzel said. “We are not sure why this was done. Mr. Knapp makes a great point that this sign may be out of place.”
The intersection is controlled by FDOT.
An FDOT spokesperson said the signage will be reviewed, but any changes could take time.
For Knapp, he’s just glad to bring attention to the problem and hopefully get some change.
“(Hopefully) people won’t be so confused,” he said.
