The ship, which was slated to make its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral on June 9, is now expected begin sailing on July 14.
Disney said the six-week delay was due the impacts of the pandemic and the omicron variant in Germany, where the ship is being built. The Meyer Werft shipyard informed Disney it would need more time to finish the ship.
“We know how much our guests are looking forward to sailing on the Disney Wish, and we understand the disappointment and inconvenience this will cause,” cruise line president Thomas Mazloum said in a release. “We treasure the relationship we have with those who sail and make memories with us, and we will work closely with those affected to welcome them aboard in the future.”
The delay affects 12 sailings and Disney officials say they have notified impacted guests. They will have the option of rebooking their trip or getting a refund. Disney is also offering impacted guests a 50% discount on a future cruise departing by Dec. 31, 2023.
Along with news of the delay, Disney has temporarily paused new bookings for the Disney Wish until Feb. 8.
“Despite this unavoidable adjustment to our plans, our team at Disney Cruise Line has never been more optimistic about the future and cannot wait to welcome families aboard the magnificent Disney Wish,” Mazloum said.
This marks the second delay for the Disney Wish. The ship was originally expected to be delivered in late 2021 for sailings beginning in January of this year. But the timeline was shifted due to COVID-19 impacts at the German shipyard.
Over the past several months, Disney has shared more details about the Disney Wish, which will feature the company’s first attraction at sea, an Avengers-themed dining experience, a Star Wars-themed lounge for adults, numerous kids’ spaces and more.
The Disney Wish is the first of three in a new class of ships being added to Disney Cruise Line’s fleet. Each of the ships will run on liquefied natural gas.
