CENTRAL FLORIDA — Several Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations will take place this weekend across Central Florida, with voting rights at the forefront.
While Dr. King's family is asking for celebrations to be put on hold until a major voting rights measure is passed, some people believe events like this honor Dr. King's legacy.
Master's Domain Church of God in Christ in Daytona Beach is hosting an 'Afternoon of Civil Rights' on Sunday featuring area pastors, elected officials, and community leaders. The event, located at 511 Fremont Avenue in Daytona Beach, begins at 4 p.m.
The City of Orlando is hosting a day of service on Monday as well as an event meant to honor civil rights.
Starting at 9 a.m., Orlando's Mayor Buddy Dyer and the mayor's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission will host an event to cleanup Lake Fran and surrounding area trails that lead to the Carver Shores neighborhood. You can register here.
Also at 9 a.m., the city's Green Up and Keep Orlando Beautiful programs are hosting an event to beautify Eagle Nest Park. Volunteers will plant, mulch, and remove litter and debris.
“Dr. King, he believed that love conquers all. He believed in people joining together, white and black — doesn’t matter who you are, doesn’t matter what color you are — that we all come together as one," said Orville Noble.
The King family plans to march on Monday across the Fredrick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. The event is meant to mirror the march for Black voting rights in 1965 in Selma, Alabama.
