ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police officers shot a man early Wednesday after responding to calls of an armed person knocking on windows at an apartment complex.

No officers were injured.

Officers responded to the Vista Verde Apartments on South Hiawassee Road in the Metro West Area just before 1 a.m.

According to police, when officers arrived, the armed suspect ran toward a car. When they caught up to him he then jumped into someone's car.

When officers attempted to apprehend the armed suspect, a man in his 30s, the suspect was shot. Police said the suspect did not fire any shots at officers.

The suspect, is in custody and was transported to Orange County Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

As standard operating procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once that process is completed, OPD will conduct its own internal investigation.

The five officers involved are on temporary paid administrative leave as part of our standard operating procedure

"Officers approached him, at that point they saw a firearm, officers fired multiple rounds at the suspect, striking the suspect," said Orlando Police Deputy Chief Eric Smith. "For the community, it's always see something say something, he started tapping on windows, people became concerned, they did the right thing, they called police. We have multiple calls on this, it enabled us to respond quickly and effectively take care of the situation."​
