ORLANDO, Fla. — Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is moving ahead with plans to build a new animal shelter.
It has hired an architect and construction firm to build a new facility on South John Young Parkway for its animals as well as the alliance’s business office and volunteer programs.

The alliance also has started a campaign to raise $14 million to cover the design, construction and all associated costs related to the new facility.
Alliance officials said they hope the new facility will be completed by September 2023.
More than a dozen cats died when their old shelter on Conroy Road in Orlando burned down in September. Investigators determined an accidental electrical failure caused the fire.
“Our timeline has moved up a bit due to the fire at the Orlando shelter in September, but we were fortunate to be so far along in the selection process,” Pet Alliance Executive Director Steve Bardy said. “We are ready to rebuild!”
Pet Alliance plans to open a temporary facility on West Central Boulevard in downtown Orlando that will house adoptable cats and serve as an offsite adoption location for dogs on the weekends. The temporary space will also serve as a shelter medical facility and office for Pet Alliance’s foster program. That space is expected to open in early 2022.
The dogs in Pet Alliance’s care are currently sheltered at the Sanford facility located at 2800 County Home Road in Sanford.
