DELTONA, Fla. – A Deltona woman is tired of crashes happening in her neighborhood, and now she wants something to be done about it.

What You Need To Know

  •  Drivers speed on Haulover Boulevard in Deltona

  •  Rose Gonzalez says crashes are common on Haulover Boulevard

  • Volusia County Sheriff's Office wrote 75 tickets and five written warners for speeding during a recent weekend

Rose Gonzalez says reckless drivers have taken out her mailbox, garbage can and even hurt an Amazon delivery driver.

Gonzalez lives on Haulover Boulevard, a popular thoroughfare in Deltona.

“The cars are very loud, they’re very fast,” she said.

Last month, when she was watching television with her family, she heard a crash involving an Amazon truck driver.

“There was a huge boom, and instantly, we’re all like shocked, ‘what’s going on, what happened?’ And we know it’s coming from the road. It’s very dangerous,” Gonzalez said.

Thankfully the driver of the Amazon truck survived. But that wasn't some isolated incident.

Just walking across the street to get to the mail box has Rose on edge.

“I’m still so paranoid about it, I’m still looking both ways, constantly, every 2-3 seconds. I stay away from the road because of the hassles, how dangerous it is,” she said.

The city of Deltona directed us to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office to see what can be done.

After we reached out to them, they had their deputies patrol Haulover, and on one particular weekend they wrote 75 tickets and five written warnings for speeding.

But even after that weekend patrol, Gonzalez says a reckless driver hit the neighborhood’s mailbox.

There is also an electric sign that clocks the speed of drivers, but drivers still speed.

“After they pass, out of sight, out of mind,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez hopes the city and the sheriff’s office are doing all that’s possible to make it safer.

“I want to be safe, I want my kids to be safe, I want my neighbors to be safe,” she said.
