ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A resident in a new community on the Orange-Lake county line is hoping to get someone to take action to stop speeders.

Jeremy Russell says drivers use his street, Coral Berry Drive, as a cut-through, straight shot in the Holly Estates community.

“Going those types of speeds really make it hard for people to stop, and you can’t see these kids coming out,” Russell says.

Speeding led to a bad crash in front of his home earlier this month, Russell says.

He and others collected signatures seeking action about their concerns but no luck, from either the developer or Orange County.

“We reached out to a lot of different people, trying to get it done, and they play the blame game,” Russell says.

The roads in Holly Estates are publicly maintained, but there is a warranty period on them because the community is still being developed.

Orange County Traffic Engineering said it will conduct a speed study.

“Once the warranty period has expired and the county has accepted the work (estimated Feb. 2022), we can move forward with installation of the justified traffic-calming device,” traffic engineering says in an e-mail.

Russell says he doesn’t think the county should wait to make safety improvements.

“I’m just waiting for the day that I look out my window and see someone flying into the air,” he says

The county said it will share results of its speed study with the sheriff’s office in hopes of slowing down drivers.
