ORLANDO, Fla. — Several events around Central Florida are taking place in remembrance of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

  • Orlando firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs in honor of first responders who died

  • Several firefighters put on their fire gear, which includes an oxygen tank

  • More than 400 emergency workers died on 9/11; 343 of them were firefighters 

At 5:30 a.m., Orlando Fire Department firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs at City National Bank in downtown Orlando in honor of the first responders who died trying to save people in the Twin Towers on 9/11.  

Several firefighters put on their fire gear, which includes an oxygen tank, to climb the stairs. 

They went up 25 flights, then took the elevator back down to the lobby and climbed 25 more flights. They did it four times and then climbed 10 more flights. 

The 110 flights of stairs represent the floors inside the World Trade Center.

First responders went into the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, and had to go up dozens of flights to try and save the people stuck on the top floors. 

More than 400 emergency workers died that day and 343 of them were firefighters 

Several other events are taking place throughout the day to honor the lives lost, the survivors and the heroes during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

An American flag will rise above Orange Avenue in front of Orlando City Hall in remembrance of when the first tower was struck.

There will also be an Orlando Fire Department candlelight remembrance ceremony Saturday night, which is closed to the public, but will be streamed on Facebook.  

After that, the Lake Eola Fountain will turn red, white and blue.
