SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Seminole County leaders are eyeing expanding a road to help ease congestion in the ever-growing Oviedo area.

What You Need To Know

  • Design phase is underway to widen Slavia Road

  • County is also considering extending Slavia Road between State Road 426 & State Road 434

  • Slavia improvements needed because of congestion on Mitchell Hammock Road

Plans are in place to widen Slavia Road between Red Bug Lake Road and State Road 426.

“I think it's about time for Slavia to get widened because Oviedo is growing in population and this is a lot of traffic going through Slavia,” said Alfredo Williams, who lives and works in the Oviedo area. “I'm happy that they're expanding it, finally."

Williams adds it will help ease some of the congestion on Mitchell Hammock Road.

"If you're ever here around 5 o'clock, just make sure you have some food or something, or somebody on the phone with you, because you're going to be in traffic for at least a good 30 minutes," said Williams.

More than 53,000 drivers use Mitchell Hammock Road every day.

Seminole County commissioners, like Bob Dallari, know congestion is a problem.

“Mitchell Hammock Road in Oviedo is pretty much maxed out,” Dallari said. “It’s a four-lane road, plus a dividing turn lane and what happens is there is no place to widen it."

But county officials are not just looking to widen Slavia Road, they also want to expand it to the east, providing another connection between State Road 426 and Alafaya Road.

“The best thing to do is to put another parallel road in,” said Dallari.

A parallel road to Mitchell Hammock Road could help ease backups.

The projects would require land to be acquired, something that won’t sit well with home and business owners.

The county told Spectrum News 13 that widening construction is set to begin in 2025 or 2026. There is no timetable for the extension project.
