BUFFALO, N.Y. — Three former female athletes at Canisius College are suing the school, claiming that it enabled a culture of harassment and sexual assault on the cross country and track and field teams.
The lawsuit also names the team's head coach, the athletic director and a former male student.
Both the men's and women's teams were coached by Nathan Huckle.
Huckle is accused of publicly singling out and mocking female and lesbian athletes, and retaliating against anyone who reported it.
Additionally, the suit argues that the harassment fostered a hostile environment which promoted sexual abuse.
It claims the male athletes would provide underage athletes with alcohol or marijuana to take advantage of them.
The women allege that a male member of the team sexually assaulted them at separate off-campus team parties in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
After an investigation, he was suspended from the team, but allowed to remain a student.
They claim leaders at Canisius repeatedly failed to take appropriate action despite many reports and complaints.
In a statement, Canisius College said the complaints were promptly and thoroughly investigated:
