SAN MARCOS, Texas — The San Marcos Police Department charged two people with capital murder after a fatal shooting involving a Texas State University football player on Tuesday night at The Lodge Apartments.

According to San Marcos police, a call came in reporting people running and gunshots in the area of the apartments. When police arrived, they found Khambrail Winters with gunshot wounds to chest but were unable to successfully perform lifesaving measures.

Detectives arrived on scene and interviewed several witnesses. During the interviews, police discovered that Winters and two other people - Enalisa Blackman and Michael Ifeanacho - planned to buy drugs, according to witnesses. The drug deal was set up at the apartment complex where Blackman met two others to purchase a couple ounces of marijuana.

Police said Winters was shot and died on scene during the deal. Authorities charged Blackman with Ifeanach with capital murder.

Winters was a 20-year-old defensive back on a full football scholarship at Texas State.

Texas State University football coach Jake Spavital released this statement:

“Our Texas State University football team is deeply saddened by the death of our team member, and friend, Khambrail Winters.  I met with players this morning to share this the news about Khambrail.  We will stand together as a team and support one and other during this very difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences are with Khabrail's family and loved ones.”
