VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The 2020 election is shattering records across Central Florida, including in Volusia County where election officials are gearing up for the busy day ahead.
What You Need To Know
- Volusia County has already broken early voting records
- So far, turnout has been just over 62%
- Officials are now looking toward Election Day
- Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“It’s exciting we’ve had a great turnout," said Lisa Lewis, the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections. "You know here in Volusia County we broke a record with early voting, we broke a record with vote by mail, you know I think we are going to break a record for turn out.
"So far we’ve had a 62% turnout, actually a little over 62%, so you know I think by the time we close the polls tomorrow at 7 p.m. we will be at 80% at least.”
Lewis said that would be the highest turn out Volusia has ever seen. It's a possibility that makes voters like Debbie Taylor proud.
“I think it is wonderful because everyone has a voice, I think, with regardless of what party you are everyone needs to vote, that’s their right, and I think that it will give all of us a good idea of how the majority of people really feel,” Taylor said, as she hand-delivered her mail-in ballot on Monday.
With the approval of the canvassing board, Lewis’s staff has already tallied nearly all 250,000 of the early votes, potentially making things easier for them tomorrow.
“As soon as all the precincts get in, we finish the vote by mail for tomorrow and then for the most part our results will be in,” Lewis said.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Lewis reminded voters to be sure to bring a valid ID with them.
Lewis also shared that everything is running smoothly with the post office so far. They plan to drive out to the USPS plants to pick up any last-minute mail-in ballots Tuesday afternoon.
Provisional ballots will begin being counted on Thursday. Voters that have issues with the signature on their ballot also have until Thursday to fix it. Out-of-country voters have a 10-day grace period to get their ballots in and counted.
