BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — As the sports pauses during the coronavirus pandemic, figure skating rinks have also closed, with upcoming competitions canceled.

But Brevard County coaches are not letting the closures stop them from training their students.

Theatre on Ice Coach Katie Nyman says her students worked hard to get to nationals and were on their way to the world championship until ice rinks closed nationwide. Not only did she see her students dreams fade, her livelihood was melting.

“The hardest thing for a skater is being off the ice. You can be off the ice for four days and you lose the timing on jumps,” Nyman said.

Nyman took matters into her own hands and continued training her students off ice through video chatting. She has a full schedule coaching the theatre on ice teams along with private lessons.

Nyman says out of more than 100 theatre on ice teams nationwide, her students were the only Florida team to qualify for nationals, two teams placing fourth in their division and one placing first.

“Eighty skaters at the Iceplex who do theater on ice, we run four classes a week, and we work during U.S. nationals, which this year has been canceled,” she said.

While most skaters ultimate dream is to be part of figure skating shows and traveling shows, Space Coast Iceplex skater Roman Wyzik wants to be an Olympian. He trains with inline skates about an hour a day but can't wait to get back on the ice.

“I passed all of the levels which I'm sure are 14, and now I'm working on my doubles,” Wyzik said. “I really want to go to the Olympics when I'm older, and I'm trying to work hard during this time, off ice training and Pic skating is a very good substitute.”
