SHANGHAI, China — Shanghai Disney Resort will be closed until further notice as the deadly coronavirus spreads in China, park officials said Friday.

"In response to the prevention and control of the disease outbreak and in order to ensure the health and safety of our guests and cast, Shanghai Disney Resort is temporarily closing Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown including Walt Disney Grand Theater and Wishing Star Park, starting January 25, 2020," the resort said in a statement on its website.

The closure comes a day after Shanghai Disney announced it would be temporarily adjusting its ticketing policy, allowing visitors to reschedule or refund tickets and hotel reservations.

With China's Lunar New Year holiday underway, Shanghai Disney will be closed during one of the resort's busiest periods. That could result in a big financial impact for The Walt Disney Company, which own a 43 percent stake in Shanghai Disney.

More than 11 people visited Shanghai Disney is its first year of operation. 

The deadly coronavirus, which broke out in the city of Wuhan, has killed as many as 26 people and infected hundreds more. 

The outbreak has prompted the lockdowns of several cities as well as entertainment venues and public transportation systems in an effect to help stop the spread of the disease. 

Symptoms of the virus are similar to those of the cold or flu, including fever, cough and shortness of breath.
