Joshua T. Durner, a sophomore, was killed outside the entrance of Pine Ridge High School, the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
Five others, including two young children, incurred nonlife-threatening injuries in the crash.
Durner was driving alone in a 2006 Hyundai Elantra going eastbound on Howland Boulevard at about 6:50 a.m. when he tried to turn into the school's entrance, Sheriff's investigators said.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office has Howland Boulevard closed down in front of Pine Ridge High School in Deltona on Monday morning.

As he turned, his car traveled into the path of a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder that was going westbound on the road, the Sheriff's Office said.
Students at the school said it was silent all day in class as they remembered their classmate.
"I just seen a car and it just looked like... It hadn’t been cut in half, but it was smashed..." senior William Judy said. "It was just terrible. I couldn't believe what I was looking at."
Dayana Garcia, 34, was driving the Pathfinder that hit Durner's car. Francisco Pinto, 63, was driving a 2015 Nissan pickup truck that was behind the Pathfinder.
Garcia, of Port Orange, had Angelo Rodriguez, 33, and two children, ages 3 and 1, in her SUV at the time of the crash. The children were not significantly hurt, authorities said. Garcia incurred a hip injury, and she and Rodriguez were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for nonlife-threatening injuries.
Pinto was taken to Advent Health Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City for a minor back injury.
Investigators said Durner was not wearing a seat belt.
The Sheriff's Office said a 15-year-old driving with a Florida learner's permit must be accompanied by a licensed driver older than 21. But investigators said Durner was running late this morning and missed his normal ride, so he drove himself without his parents' knowledge.
No charges are pending.
"That's a young life. Him driving at 15 years old with not a guardian or parent with him, that's kind of crazy," Dennis Roberts of Deltona said.
Other parents of students at the school were saddened by the choice the teenager made.
"Not only did he put his life in danger, he put everybody else that was going to school in danger," said Trinity Barclay, a mother.
"This was somebody that went to our school’s life," Judy, the senior, said. "Maybe we should be more careful with how we are like doing stuff on the roads.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
Grief counselors were scheduled to be at the high school Monday. Parents were encouraged to reach out to their student's counselor if they feel they may need additional support.
