ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — An Altamonte Springs woman wants to know the purpose of newly painted green markings at cross streets along State Road 436.
“This is what I wanted to know. What are these green lines for?” Susana Pineda said.
Pineda lived much of her life in New York City and never learned to drive. Now that she lives in Altamonte Springs, she walks most everywhere near her home.
Pineda noticed the green lines along State Road 436, where construction is wrapping up on a resurfacing and safety project from Cranes Roost Boulevard to Boston Avenue.
“At first, we were thinking that maybe it could be for a bike lane, or for people to cross, or for the cars to turn," she said. "That's what we wanted to know what it was for."
A Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson said the green markings are meant to delineate the crossing areas for the new bike path running alongside the recently widened sidewalks.
“FDOT has started incorporating these green markings into our projects per national standards,” said FDOT spokesman Tim Freed.
He said the bright green markings also warn drivers when they are entering an area where bicyclists are likely to cross, so they know to yield.
“In a high-traffic corridor like uptown Altamonte, these markings serve as an effective visual cue to help drivers stay alert and yield appropriately,” Freed said.
The markings give bicyclists a clear indication of where they should cross at an intersection.
Pineda’s suspicion that the markings are for bike riders proved to be correct.
“It keeps me safe, and it'll keep the other people safe, too,” she said.
