ORLANDO, Fla. — The city of Orlando will assemble a task force to develop ways to improve diversity among fire department recruits, officials said Friday afternoon.

  • Orlando Fire diversity recruitment task force to be assembled
  • Move comes a week after resignation of Orlando fire chief
  • City of Orlando appoints veteran to serve as interim fire chef

The announcement comes about a week after the resignation of Orlando Fire Chief Roderick Williams, who had been accused by a female subordinate of discrimination, differential treatment, and sexual harassment.

In a letter, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said it found evidence supporting the woman's claims. A separate investigation by the city concluded that the woman's claims were unsubstantiated. The EEOC letter also said the Orlando Fire Department's investigation into the matter was "faulty and biased."

The city said Friday that its task force would "develop benchmarks and strategies for increasing the recruitment of women and minorities in the fire department and to develop and implement professional standards and policies that encourage a more diverse and welcoming environment."

No other details, such as who would be on the task force or how long it would take to convene and implement, were released.

Deputy Chief Rich Wales was appointed interim fire chief until a new chief is appointed.
