The crash happened just before 6 p.m. at the train tracks near Lancaster Road and Orange Avenue in the Pine Castle area.

The male bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said. Orange County Fire Rescue also responded.

Saul Urena was stopped in his car on Lancaster waiting for the train to pass when he witnessed the man get hit.

“I jumped out of my car as soon as the arms went up. I went to go try to help and see where he was at, and he was just in a ditch a hundred feet away,” Urena said.

He said the stop arms were down, the railroad crossing bells were ringing, and the warning lights were flashing, but the man on the bike simply couldn’t get off the tracks in time.

“By the time he stopped his bicycle, it was on the first set of railroad tracks, and he tried to back up and he couldn’t back up in time. His head was in front of his handle bars and all of a sudden the train just came,” Urena explained.
