Smith appears at the end of the clip in full blue CGI.
"You really don't know who I am?" Genie asks as he moves toward Aladdin. "Genie, wishes, lamp. None of that ringing a bell?"
However, many fans were left unimpressed by Genie's appearance and the reaction on Twitter was swift.
"I'll never sleep again and it's all Will Smith's fault," tweeted one user.
"All three of my wishes would be to unsee the Will Smith genie," tweeted another.
The character was originally voiced by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film.
In addition to Genie, the trailer also provides glimpses at Aladdin (Mena Massoud), Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) and the Cave of Wonders.
Directed by Guy Ritchie, Aladdin is set to be released in theaters on May 24.
