TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Someone is sending out emails demanding payment for unpaid SunPass tolls. Florida Transportation officials say it's not them, and SunPass users should be aware.

  • FDOT: Emails for unpaid SunPass tolls come from unauthorized third party
  • Emails threaten a court summons if past due tolls are not paid
  • FDOT says SunPass toll invoices are only sent through U.S. regular mail

FDOT sent out a notice, saying the emails are coming from a third party with an email address of "SunPassNotice@ezpass-collections.net."

The emails also have this language: "Please find the attached invoice for past due tolls that have been charged to your Sun Pass account. Failure to pay will result in a summons for court appearance within 30 days."

A link to an invoice in the email identifies the sender as either "Sun Pass Collections Inc" or "Sun Pass Collections Inc Linebargar Goggen Blaiir, LLP."

FDOT says neither group is associated with them, or the SunPass toll programs. Officials say they do not send toll invoices through email, only through U.S. regular mail. The only website were you should be making a payment are the SunPass.com or TollByPlate.com websites.

FDOT says anyone who received the email can file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.

The warning about the scam comes months after problems with a new SunPass toll system led to a backlog of unprocessed toll transactions, numbering in the hundreds of millions.
