If you are still struggling after Hurricane Irma, there are resources available in Kissimmee Sunday through Wednesday.

  • Food assistance available in Kissimmee for residents affected by Irma
  • Resources available in Kissimmee through Wednesday, Oct. 11

People can apply for food assistance through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and apply for assistance at FEMA's disaster recovery center at the Osceola Heritage Community Hall on Chief Osceola Trail.

Early Sunday morning, thousands of people stood in line for hours waiting to see if they could qualify for two months of food assistance.

Rhonda Hurst qualified based on her income and household size.

She drove from Lake County to Kissimmee on Sunday.

"I got about $200 for each month, it is a great help for me," said Rhonda Hurst, received assistance.

For Rhonda, Irma is still fresh on her mind.

She is one of about 5,000 people who qualified for the food assistance program on Sunday.

She was emotional as she talked about receiving help.

"It helps a whole lot of people, you know the family with kids you lost their food, their family, their homes and I'm just thankful for the help," said Hurst.

Rhonda, like many others who attended Sunday, have been put in a tough spot. She still needs to replenish her food and has damage to her home.

At the Osceola Heritage Community Hall, people can also try to receive help from FEMA at the disaster recovery center that opened there on Sunday.

At the center, people can ask questions or apply for assistance.

"The best thing really is to come into the disaster recovery center because you can get all your questions answered because if you get a letter of ineligibility, there is someone that can go over that with you and help you with your appeal," said Peter Sessum, FEMA Spokesperson.

Peter Sessum with FEMA said right now a lot of people are coming in with questions and it's clear that there is a need in this community.

Resources are available in Kissimmee through Wednesday.
