A man has been charged with attempted murder in Osceola County after Kissimmee police said he threw his 2-year-old son off a second-floor motel balcony before jumping off, himself.
Police said they responded around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to the Budget Inn East, on the 300 block of East Vine Street, where they found Juan Pablo Maradiaga, 41, and the 2-year-old lying on the ground in the hotel's parking lot.
A witness told 911, "I have a baby and a young man lying on the ground. They're out."
Police said surveillance video showed Maradiaga toss his son approximately 25 feet onto the ground below before he jumped seconds later. Investigators said they were not releasing that video at this time.
Both were taken to area hospitals in critical condition. The toddler was still recovering Tuesday afternoon at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, where the Florida Department of Children and Families said he was being treated for multiple injuries, including several fractures.
Maradiaga also broke his leg in the fall. Police said once he's discharged from Orlando Regional Medical Center, he'll be taken straight to the Osceola County Jail.
Investigators said Maradiaga grew "frustrated with the child."
"[He] called the baby's mother about 30 minutes prior to incident, requesting her to come back and pick up the child because he was frustrated, but she couldn't, because she was at work," said Stacie Miller, a Kissimmee Police Department spokeswoman.
The boy's mother told police she had just taken the child to the hospital the day before for diarrhea issues, but people who live nearby said that's no excuse for Maradiaga's alleged actions.
"That doesn't justify his behavior," said Ron Colson, who lives near the hotel. "I think it's irrational. I think they should do a drug test on him. Either that, or [he's] mentally ill. You've just got to be nuts."
Police said Maradiaga's breath smelled of alcohol.
Annia Jones, who lives at the motel just below Maradiaga, said the couple had a very heated relationship, and the toddler's mother did not want to leave her son with him that night.
"She had no one else to watch her baby," said Jones. "She's a single mom who is taking care of her baby on her own."
For now, DCF said the boy will stay in safe care at the hospital, where doctors said they expect him to recover.
