The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office created a new mental health unit. The unit was developed after Lt. Toni Roach traveled the country examining how law enforcement agencies manage mental health cases while policing. We examine the new health unit, how it will work and the impact it could have across the state. Will other agencies adopt similar units? We will expand the conversation to include diversity and how law enforcement interacts with Floridians with special needs such as autism and individuals of all levels of intellectual functioning and sensory impairments. The conversation will also include the use of Florida’s “Red Flag” laws that allows officers to take guns from people deemed dangerous or suffering from a mental health issue.
