ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health has confirmed the first case of monkeypox in Orange County, officials announced Friday in an email statement.

According to the Department of Health, a person between the ages of 35 to 39 has monkeypox and in Orange County.

"Our epidemiology team is actively monitoring the situation," a spokesman for FDOH-Orange County said. "The individual remains isolated and is receiving treatment."

No other information has been released.

The CDC explains that monkeypox is similar to smallpox, but there are a few differences.

“In humans, the symptoms of monkeypox are similar to but milder than the symptoms of smallpox. Monkeypox begins with fever, headache, muscle aches, and exhaustion. The main difference between symptoms of smallpox and monkeypox is that monkeypox causes lymph nodes to swell (lymphadenopathy) while smallpox does not,” the CDC stated.

Florida's Department of Health has confirmed that there are currently 10 cases of monkeypox in the entire state, as of Friday, June 17.

These numbers were compiled on Friday, June 17, 2022, and show the current number of monkeypox cases in Florida, which counties have the cases and the age ranges of the patients.
