DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A man who was wanted in a connection to a shooting earlier this month was shot dead by four Daytona Beach Police Department officers on Wednesday night, according to officials.

It happened about 8 p.m. in Daytona Beach near South Daytona.

According to a press release, the Daytona Beach Police Department stated that four of its officers pulled over a man at the intersection of U.S. 1/ Ridgewood Avenue and Beville Road; they say he was a suspect in another shooting. 

Investigators say the man, whose name has not been released, had an active warrant in connection to a shooting in the Fairway Estates neighborhood earlier this month. 

They were monitoring him outside a home and they say when he got into the passenger seat of a white four-door sedan, the four officers followed him and pulled him over at U.S. 1 and Beville Road, according to the press release. 

Police stated they boxed in the car using other patrol cars and sent a K-9 unit in when the suspect refused to get out of the car. 

Officers say when the K-9 tried to pull the man out of the car it appeared he tried to reach for a gun and the officers fired at him, stated the police department. The department did not state if a gun was recovered from the car.

The man was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment, but he died, stated the police in the press release.

Daytona Beach Police Department has not identified the four officers involved but they are on paid administrative leave per the department’s policy, according to the press release, which added the officers were not hurt in the shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the fatal shooting.

There is no word on the status of the driver of the car involved.
