ORLANDO, Fla. — A+ Teacher Michael Antmann is truly in his element when he is in the classroom at Freedom High School in Orlando. He says his students aren’t the only ones who are learning.

What You Need To Know

  • Michael Antmann is the band director
  • Antmann participated in the band program throughout middle and high school
  • He wants his students to know making mistakes is ok

Antmann wants his students to feel at ease and comfortable while they’re learning.

"People make mistakes. It's OK to make mistakes when we play right? We always say ‘wrong and strong’ like it's OK to make mistakes. I make mistakes all the time and certainly they let me know when I do," Antmann said.

He says his students aren’t the only ones who are learning.

"There are easy days and hard days, and every class presents unique challenges that's an opportunity for me to grow," he says.

Antmann understands what his students face, since he was in band too throughout middle and high school. He later became a music education major in college, earning his doctorate degree from the University of Central Florida.

With more than two decades of experience as a music educator, he is grounded and has high standards for his students to shine, too.

"Our focus is on skills that they can apply to other things. So, we spend a lot of time on fundamentals at the beginning of class because there are things they can apply to their music and the stronger they are there — the faster they can learn music that they're playing," Antmann added.

It's clear he loves his career in the classroom.

"Orange County Public Schools is the home of some of the greatest support for Arts education nationwide. It's just a great place to be," Antmann said.
