Stone loves watching young people make connections when they are learning. Her passion is helping them connect the dots.
“I love art because the kids can be creative and then we have a lot of freedom, but then I can integrate science and math and social studies and all the other stuff, and they don’t really know that they’re learning it,” she said.
Stone said she knew when she was 10 or 11 years old that she wanted to pursue a career in the classroom.
“I made my cousins learn to read. I taught my sister to read,” she said.
Stone became an elementary school instructor and was teaching all subjects until about 20 years ago, when she decided she wanted to teach art.
She is making her mark, and you can see it in her students’ work as they soak it all in.
“I think a lot of people don’t give them credit for all that they can do, and they can be really creative and come up with neat solutions to problems,” Stone said. “It’s not just babysitting. Every moment is a teachable moment.”
