“Luminous The Symphony of Us” premiered Tuesday — the same day the park’s World Celebration Gardens and “Walt the Dreamer” statue debuted to visitors.

For the new show, Disney Imagineers opted not to use screens to tell the story — a departure from the park’s previous nighttime show “Harmonious,” which debuted during Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Instead, the roughly 17-minute show on World Showcase Lagoon relies heavily on fountains, lights, lasers, music and lots of fireworks.

With “Luminous,” Disney wanted to tell a story that evoked the spirit of shared experiences and human connections, about people coming together.

“We wanted that story to be emotionally connected to our audience,” said Tom Williams, executive producer with Disney Live Entertainment, during a panel with media. “We wanted everybody to make the story their own story. We wanted to really bring everybody together as you’re all gathering around the lagoon.”

The show starts with voices around the World Showcase welcoming visitors in different languages. The different country pavilions also join in throughout the show with light effects.

Music plays a huge part in “Luminous.” It features two new original songs — “Heartbeat Symphony” and “Beating of our Hearts” — which bookend the show. But it also features several songs from Disney films arranged differently, including “You’ll Be in My Heart” from “Tarzan,” “Remember Me” from “Coco,” and “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II.”

“I think the most special thing about our show is that we wanted to bring these songs to you in a totally different way, and we wanted to put new songs in,” music producer Stef Fink said. “We have two new songs in our show — bookending our show in the beginning and the end — because we really felt we need to tell the story more, and we didn’t want to turn back just to the Disney IP to do that. We wanted to bring something to EPCOT that was wholly EPCOT and our own.”

“Luminous” also uses fireworks in different ways. In one of the show’s moments, the red fireworks burst in the shape of hearts.

Another change Disney made with “Luminous” is the barges, which aren’t as massive as the ones used for “Harmonious.” Also, they aren't permanent fixtures on the lagoon and will get brought out each day.
