ORLANDO, Fla. — After weeks of soft openings and technical rehearsals, Minion Land, the new area themed to the mischievous yellow characters from the “Despicable Me” films, has officially opened at Universal Studios Florida.

What You Need To Know

  • Minion Land is the newest themed land at Universal Studios Florida

  • It features a restaurant, a bake shop, character meet-and-greets and a new attraction

  • Villain-Con Minion Blast is an interactive attraction where visitors can vie for a spot on the Vicious 6

The land, marked by its bright-colored buildings, is located along the newly-designated Illumination Avenue near the front of the park. A large sign covered with dozens of Minions greets visitors at the entrance.

Minion Land includes the existing Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction as well as new additions like a Minions-themed restaurant, a character meet-and-greet area, gift shops and the centerpiece attraction, Villain-Con Minion Blast.

Here’s a rundown of what you can do at the new land.

Minion-style Dining

If you get hungry while visiting Minion Land, don’t fret. There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat or a cool drink. The land has its very own themed sit-down restaurant: Minion Cafe, which features a variety of dishes and lots of yellow.

On the menu are items inspired by characters from the films. There’s a selection of what Universal has dubbed “Despica-Bowls,” with names like Otto’s Noodle Bowl and Kevin’s Chopa Chota Salad. Other items include sandwiches, as in the Steak & “Cheese Ray,” sides like Minion Tots and desserts.

When creating the menu, Universal’s culinary team wanted to incorporate the fun style of the Minions brand with flavors that would appeal to different palettes.

“We’ve taken inspiration from the movies, of course the storytelling from Illumination, and we’re bringing it all together which is this multi-sensory experience which Minion Cafe is,” said Chef Jens Dahlman, VP, executive chef of operations at Universal Orlando. “We have everything, especially this menu is very ethnic. We have Hispanic and Asian influences. We have American flavors.  So the menu really offers something for everybody.”

For more sweet treats, there’s Bake My Day bakery located in a very pink building with a giant cupcake on top. The shop serves cupcakes and Swiss rolls, cake pops and more. Freeze Ray Pops has cold popsicles in a variety of flavors, including banana, strawberry and Nutella.

Another banana-flavored item can be found at Pop-A-Nana, a popcorn stand with banana-flavored popcorn. Regular ol’ popcorn is available, too.

Let’s Go Blasting

Minion Land also features a brand-new attraction: Villain-Con Minion Blast. It's an interactive blaster game on a moving walkway.

Visitors will be transported to Villain-Con, a fictional convention for supervillains, to take part in a challenge to see if they have what it takes to join the Vicious 6.

Early on in the development process for the attraction, the Universal Creative team knew they wanted to tell a story that took place at Villain-Con.

“At the same time we were coming up with this attraction, the new Minions film was coming out “The Rise of Gru,” which features the Vicious 6,” said Carson Luter, associate project manager with Universal Creative. “So we had this opportunity. We knew we wanted to tell a story of Villain-Con, and the we knew we wanted to incorporate the new villain from the new film in an attraction.”

As they travel through the queue, visitors will enter as spaces that has been made to look like a convention floor with vendor booths and gadgets on display.

Visitors will grab an E-Liminator X blaster to start the challenge. They’ll then be assigned a spot on the walkway, which will move them through different scenes themed to a different villain. Using the handheld blaster, they will aim at on-screen targets to score points.

Each room also features a mix of physical set pieces.

“We knew early on that we want to have physical things that you can blast at,” Luter said. So there’s power up boxes that you can blast at. There’s portraits that you can blast at. There’s a Jumbotron you can blast at, all the while surrounding you are screens with intricate show sets that kind of frame it in.”

When a lot of people are blasting at once, the on-screen activity can seem chaotic. A tip for orienting yourself is to note the color displayed on your blaster.

“Right when you get your blaster, take a look at your blaster,” Luter said. “The dome color of the blaster and on the screen is going to tell you what color to look for when you’re in the attraction.”

Strike a Pose

The new land also offers Illumination Theater, an outdoor area for character meet-and-greets.

The outside of the art deco-style theater face, features a marquee where characters will appear on the red carpet underneath for photo ops.

Minions and characters from the animated film “Sing” will appear periodically throughout the day. But the space has room for future characters.

“We designed this to be able to house any character, both now in our current library and, knowing that Illumination is going to continue to make amazing animated films, being able to incorporate any new character into this location,” said Mike Aiello, senior director of entertainment creative development.
