The pricey experience lets fans live out their own Star Wars adventures through character interactions, themed activities and role-playing. A two-night voyage runs $4,800 ($1,200 per person per night) and a four-person cabin goes for close to $6,000.
And while it received glowing reviews from guests, ultimately it performed below Disney’s expectations, according to Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro.
“It didn’t perform exactly like we wanted it to perform, so we decided that we were going to sunset this in September,” D’Amaro said.
D’Amaro, who was participating in a Q&A session during the JP Morgan Global, Technology, Media and Communications Conference, called Starcruiser a “pretty stunning asset,” adding that it “raised the bar.”
He also praised Imagineers for the work they did to bring the experience to life.
“But again, I give the Imagineers a lot of credit, because this gives us the creative insight to think about new experiences as we move forward,” D’Amaro said.
The 100-room Starcruiser will have its final voyage Sept. 28-30.
Once Starcruiser closes, D’Amaro said Disney will accelerate depreciation on the attraction for the next two quarters.
“In both Q3 and Q4, as we accelerate depreciation on that Starcruiser, we should expect about $100-$150 million acceleration in depreciation,” he said.
