TAMPA, Fla. — A critically endangered Sumatran tiger has found a new home at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

The 9-year-old tiger named Bandar was moved from Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington, as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.

Bandar, Busch Gardens’ first and only Sumatran tiger, can been seen by visitors in the park’s Jungala area.

“Watching Bandar settle into his new home is exciting and inspiring,” said Jenny Mendoza, vice president-zoological for Busch Gardens, in a news release. “We are very thrilled to provide him with a home for him to thrive, share his story with our guests, and have our zoological facilities serve as a building block for the prosperous future of all tigers.”

Sumatran tigers are on the brink of extinction with less 400 known to remain in the wild, according to Busch Gardens.
