The Brevard Zoo welcomed on Friday morning the birth of an unnamed baby sloth.
The mother, 13-year-old Sammy, is doing fine and is said to be taking good care of the baby sloth, whose sex is unknown since testing is needed to discover the gender, the Brevard Zoo stated in a news release.
Sammy is no stranger to motherhood.
"Sammy is not a first-time mom, so she has experience in raising babies," said Michelle Smurl, director of animal programs at the Brevard Zoo. "We're glad to be able to take a hands-off approach and see the newborn thriving in a more natural setting."
She gave birth to her first child Tango, who also lives in the zoo and gave birth to Lorenzo last October. However, the zoo's animal care staff helped in raising Lorenzo because Tango did not take an interest in her baby at first.
Dustin, 15, fathered the two babies.
The new baby sloth will stay with Sammy for about six months before he or she decides to go out on his or her own.
However, sloth lovers will not be able to see Sammy and her baby, located at La Selva, because of construction at that part of the zoo.
Yet, guests might get a peek of the two from above Treetop Trek.
The Brevard Zoo did not mention if one of its cranes delivered the baby sloth.
