ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic have signed veteran point guard Cory Joseph, President of Basketball Operations announced Friday.

As is standard team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Multiple media sources have indicated the deal is for two years, with the second year a team option.

What You Need To Know

  • Veteran guard Cory Joseph has signed with Orlando

  • The deal means the Magic now have filled their 15 maximum roster spots

  • Guard Markelle Fultz and Chuma Okeke will not be back with team, at least for now

  • The Magic still have spots to sign two two-way players

Joseph, 33, adds experience to the Magic’s guard depth chart. He will be entering his 14th NBA season. He has played in 816 games and six teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons and Golden State Warriors. Joseph, 6 feet 3, has averaged 6.9 points and 3 assists and shot 34.9% from 3-point range in his career.

Last season with Golden State, he played in 26 games and averaged 2.6 points, 1.6 assists and shot 31% from 3-point range in 11.4 minutes per game. Joseph was drafted No. 29 overall in 2011 by San Antonio and won an NBA championship with the Spurs in the 2013-14 season. He has played in 82 career playoff games.

The signing of Joseph essentially completes the Magic roster unless the team makes a trade. The maximum 15 regular roster spots are filled.

That means guard Markelle Fultz and forward Chuma Okeke will not return to the team, at least for now. Neither player has signed with another team yet for the upcoming season.

Fultz, a former No. 1 pick of the Philadelphia 76ers, spent five seasons with the Magic but only played in 201 games because of injuries. He played in 72 games his first season but then only in eight the next season and did not play more than 60 games for them any other season. He is only 26 years old.

The Magic drafted Okeke No. 16 overall out of Auburn in the 2019 NBA Draft, knowing he would not be able to play his first season because he needed knee surgery after getting injured during the NCAA Tournament. Okeke, 25, played in 189 games for Orlando over four NBA seasons. His best season was in 2021-22, when he averaged 8.6 points, 5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 70 games played.

During the offseason, the Magic also said goodbye to forward Joe Ingles, who signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves after one season in Orlando, and to two-way players Admiral Schofield and Kevon Harris. The Magic still have two spots open for two-way players.
