PALM BAY, Fla. — A plan could soon be put in place to redevelop part of the troubled area of Palm Bay known as The Compound.
City leaders met with stakeholders Tuesday, working to formulate an action plan on the area’s future.

This all falls under the umbrella of the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council’s nominating The Compound for a planning project.
Technical assistance is being provided by a $100,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to pay for a consultant.
In November, the team gathered data and information related to the compound, with a site visit involving stakeholders and large property owners.
Then discussions involve the future of transportation, stormwater and utilities.
The Compound is a large area that once was going to be developed into a sprawling residential community, but went bankrupt in the 80s.
Since then, it’s become a recreational area for ATVs and dirt bikes, but unfortunately over the years it’s been plagued with criminal activity, deadly off-road crashes, and illegal trash dumping.
The Palm Bay City Council will be briefed on the findings at Thursday’s council meeting.
Newly elected councilman Mike Hammer says “anything positive in The Compound is a good step forward.”
Input is also being sought from the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast and the Greater Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce.
