FLORIDA — With any hurricane that hits Florida, it poses the risk of widespread power outages. But what does that mean for your fridge full of perishable food?

The preparation starts before the storm hits, according to the USDA. Make sure your freezer is set to zero degrees Fahrenheit and keep the fridge at 40 degrees.

Food safety officials also recommend prepping ice packs ahead of time by using food containers or small plastic bags and filling them with water.

The USDA stated to also freeze any perishables such as leftovers, meat and chicken as this will keep them at a safe temperature for longer.

The USDA also stated an un-powered refrigerator will keep food at a safe temperature for about four hours if it is not opened.

And a freezer will keep a safe temperature for nearly 48 hours.

But remember — when in doubt, throw it out.
