ORLANDO, Fla. — At least 6 inches of snow has been reported in parts of the Florida panhandle, surpassing the record of 4 inches set in 1954.

The record snowfall comes as chilly rain has set up across parts of Florida.

What You Need To Know

  • On and off rain is expected across the Florida Panhandle, Central Florida and the Tampa Bay area on Tuesday, Jan. 21

  • The rain will bring snow and ice to North Florida and parts of Central Florida

  • Marion County is under a Winter Weather Advisory for sleet and freezing rain that could mix in briefly

A stalled front will be the source of deep moisture riding along it for the next few days, offering rounds of rain while temperatures stay below-average. Tuesday will feature periods of rain, mostly light to moderate, with highs only in the 50s.

Severe weather is not expected with this system.

Temperatures will be running below-average, but it won't be cold enough to support the wintry weather that the Florida Panhandle will experience. Lows will stay in the 40s for much of the Central and West Central Florida.

With increasing north winds, the combination of that plus the colder temperatures has prompted a Cold Weather Advisory for much of the area. Feels-like temperatures will dip into the mid- to upper 20s.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect north of the Marion/Alachua county border, and they extend north and west throughout the panhandle. Places like Tallahassee could experience 1-3 inches of snow before things taper by daybreak on Wednesday.

Marion County is in a Winter Weather Advisory because of the potential for brief sleet or freezing rain to mix with rain through Wednesday morning when temperatures are at their coldest, in the low 30s. No accumulation is expected, but it is advised to use extreme caution when traveling.

Showers will taper on Wednesday but will regenerate on Thursday as the next wave of low pressure rides along the stalled front.

It will take a few days for temperatures to bounce back, so plan on highs in the 50s through Friday. Some of the coldest lows of the week will happen Friday and Saturday mornings with widespread 30s expected.
