CENTRAL FLORIDA -- In this week's Traffic Inbox, a viewer wanted Spectrum News 13 to look into a billing issue she claims is plaguing SunPass and E-PASS customers.
- Some drivers are being charged double at the tollbooth
- E-Pass, SunPass cite two issues for that problem
Jasmine Stocks says she knows several people charged multiple times for the same toll transactions and then are being told by customer service that they have to pay both or lose their licenses in the process.
It is an interesting question and one that does not necessarily have an easy answer.
Spectrum News 13 visited at the E-PASS Corporate Offices in Orlando looking for answers and they believe there might be two different issues at play here.
The first one is rather straightforward: When an E-PASS or SunPass customer runs out of money and does not replenish his or her funds, that driver may be unaware and simply assuming it should have been billed to their E-PASS or SunPass.
An E-PASS representative said the company has dealt with that issue just last week.
However, the second issue is a little more complex.
Sometimes a customer goes through a toll and the system reads it, but has an issue identifying the correct car to associate with the transponder.
This causes a charge to the transponder and it will violate the customer's car as well.
Both E-PASS and SunPass are designed to self-correct the issue when it sees the license plate associated with the transponder has already been charged a toll.
However, if the driver has not kept his or her license plate info up to date, this does not work.
The same car is seen by computers as two separate ones, which means a double charge.
The bottom line is this: If you feel that you have been charged twice for a toll, send a copy of your statement with the charge highlighted to the agency that sent you the invoice.
This could help prove you were already charged for that toll. They should be able to match up the times.
