ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Big3 men's global 3-on-3 basketball league will hold its Summer in the City championship game at UCF's Addition Financial Arena on Aug. 24, the league announced Monday.
The Big3, which was founded by entertainer Ice Cube, has never played in Orlando, but the top two teams at the end of the season will compete for the title in the game in the area later this season.
The league's teans are based in eight metropolitan areas in the United States — Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and the Washington, D.C./Virginia area.
However, the rosters are sprinkled with players who spent at least some time playing for the Orlando Magic. The team that won last year's Big3 championship, DMV Trology, includes forward Earl Clark, guard Isaiah Briscoe and center Isaac Austin. Guard Jason Richardson is on the Chicago Triplets, who are coached by former Magic vice president Julius "Dr. j" Erving. Magic Hall of Famer Dwight Howard, who won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers, is captain of the L.A. Riots. Corey Brewer, who was on the Gators national championship teams in 2006 and 2007, plays for the Houston Rig Hands.
The coaches of all the teams are iconic former NBA players, including Erving, Gary Payton, George Gervin, Michael Cooper and Calvin Murphy.
In addition to the title game, the day will feature high-energy entertainment like 4-point shot contests, BMX stunt riders and a halftime performance from a yet-to-be-made-official top musical artist.
Tickets for the Big3 championship game went on sale May 16. They are available on ticketmaster.com.
