HONOLULU — The comeback magic came home with the Hawaii softball team.
With its series against UC Riverside on the line and facing a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, the Rainbow Wahine strung together four straight singles to tie the game and Milan Ah Yat’s one-out chopper brought home Larissa Goshi for the walk-off win on Saturday night.
UH (22-14, 8-6 Big West) rallied in similar fashion in the top of the seventh for a rare road series win against Cal State Fullerton last week. It has taken three straight series.
The Rainbow Wahine are tied in fourth heading into a road series at Cal State Bakersfield (14-23, 5-9). They need to place in the top six of 10 teams to qualify for the inaugural Big West tournament in May.
Earlier Saturday, UH prevailed 4-3 on Macy Brandl’s six-hitter. Brandl (10-5) also got the win in the nightcap after throwing the top of the seventh in relief of Addison Kostrencich and Millie Fidge, once Riverside (16-22, 7-8) got solo homers from Haley Saole and Jackie Alday for a 2-0 lead.
It was the second walk-off plate appearance of the season for Ah Yat, a University Lab School graduate and transfer from Loyola Marymount. The sophomore went 4-for-6 with a walk and two RBIs on the day. Her winning swing was scored a fielder's choice as the Highlanders attempted to throw home to get Goshi.
Ah Yat hit a walk-off home run against Utah Tech on Feb. 16.
Catcher Izabella Martinez went 3-for-6 with a walk and two RBIs on the day.
UCR won the first game of the series 4-2 on Friday.
