ORLANDO, Fla. — The definition of a “bucket getter” is somebody who, at any given time or place, can put the ball in the basket.
That fits Mikel Brown Jr. to a tee.
The DME Academy guard has already scored 50 points this season, which broke the school record for the most points in a single game.
More importantly, it came with a win against Dream City Christian.
"Our goal is to win a championship this year," said Brown. "Make DME known nationally. That's the biggest thing for me, and that's the biggest thing for our team, is to put DME on the map."
Brown Jr. has already been all over the world.
He represented Team USA in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup 2024 in Argentina, helping the red, white, and blue win gold.
"Playing for your country is a different type of meaning. It's bigger than anything in the world. For me, I love playing for my country. I love playing for USA," said Brown Jr.
The Avalon Park native didn’t just play in the tournament, he was in the starting lineup at every game and was third on the team in scoring.
His talent is undeniable.
Brown Jr. is ranked seventh overall by 247Sports for the class of 2025 and eleventh by ESPN, and with over 50,000 followers on Instagram, the spotlight is bright.
But Brown Jr. says he doesn’t feel the pressure.
"I love this game too much to say it’s too much for me, because (it isn't any) pressure for me — it’s just expectations and I got to live up to it," he said.
