WINTER PARK, Fla. — Winter Park High School’s boys’ volleyball is the fifth-ranked high school team in the country.

The team is carrying an undefeated record into the playoff, heading to the regional finals on Monday. The team's leading scorer is Tristan Guitton, who stands above the rest at 6 feet, 6 inches tall.

What You Need To Know

  • Tristan Guitton has been doing everything for the Wildcats, leading his volleyball team in scoring, kills and blocks

  • Now with the Wildcats as an upper-classman on the team, he’s a key part of the team’s success

"Our teams are amazing. Everyone's been putting in effort," the Winter Park High School junior said. "Everyone's been working hard together. We have good practices. Everyone's bought in, and we work together as a team. We have no issues. We get along and (that) just brought us to where we are: undefeated so far. Hoping to bring home a ring."

Guitton has been doing everything for the Wildcats, leading his team in scoring, kills and blocks.

"I started my freshman year when Coach Tom actually gave me a call and said, 'You're tall. It could be good. You should come out to tryouts.' So I did it, and then I started playing club, and my coach, Jordan, really gave me a passion for the game," Guitton said. "And now it's just been my thing ever since."

When he began the sport at the beginning of high school, he was not exactly 6 feet, 6 inches tall just yet, but his height, even then, was a convincing enough reason to take on a new sport.

"I was like 6-3, and I'm, like, 6-6 now," Guitton said.

He’ll be the first to admit, he has grown physically, yes, but in the game as well, since his freshman year.

"It's night and day. I mean, I was probably one of the worst players on our JV team when I started," Guitton said. "Now I'm out here. I'm one of our leading scorers, so hoping to go out with another state championship."

As an upper-classman on the team, he’s a key part of its success.

"I do my best to be a leader," Guitton said. "I try and be vocal at practice and keep everyone's head up and just keep our game moving smoothly. I try and get people hyped — just get going and have a good time on the court.

Still a junior, though, and working to finish strong this season, Guitton also has goals that extend beyond his time in high school.

"As far as after this, all I know is I want to play at the next level," Guitton said. "I have a few different opportunities that have come up, but we're going to have to wait and see. Hopefully, it'll be figured out pretty soon, though."
