SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — High school baseball in Brevard County has seen a lot of talent playing at the next level, either in college or in the majors. Satellite High School’s Jonathan Wolaver could be the next one to shine: in November, he signed to play for the University of South Florida.

“Just love it, it’s a great campus, great community, love the team and coaches. It’s a great fit,” he said.

The right-handed pitcher has a variety of tools in the bag when in comes to pitching. He has four different pitches he relies on.

“I throw fastball, curveball, slider and changeup,” said Wolaver.

The hard thrower’s fastball tops out at 94 miles-per-hour, but has only been pitching full time since his sophomore year.

“I pitched pretty well. I threw about 38 innings,” he said. “I threw really well and that summer, I started talking to a few college guys here and there.”

It wasn’t until the following year where he became a stronger pitcher.

“Gained a lot of velocity and started pitching a lot and the contacts just picked up from there, and a lot coaches came left and right,” he said.

But he isn’t only a pitcher — Wolaver grew up playing shortstop and still plays there when he isn’t pitching. But whether he is on the mound or in the field, he is always in the lineup. He really loves it when gets off the mound after a successful inning, then comes up to help himself at the plate.

“Competing is my favorite thing,” Wolaver said. “Whenever I throw up a zero on the board and go out there to a get a chance to score a run for my team, it’s great.”

But pitching is what he is passionate about.

“Having the ball in my hand, having control of the game — love controlling what I can control,” he said.

Wolaver is part of USF’s recruiting class that also features Hagerty’s Brayden Toro and Windermere’s Cruz Warp from the Central Florida area.
