LAKE MARY, Fla. — The dream of the Florida 12-and-under Little League team from Lake Mary came to an end late Tuesday, one step away from earning a trip to Williamsport, Pa.
In a game that was delayed hours because of weather conditions, the boys representing Florida lost to Tennessee 4-1 in the championship game of the Southeast Region Tournament.
What You Need To Know
- Lake Mary's 12-and-under baseball team lost to Tennessee 4-1 Tuesday
- The defeat in the Southeast Region Tournament means the boys won't reach the Little League World Series
- The previously had defeated North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia
If they had won, they would have been one of 10 regional champions to reach the Little League World Series in Williamsport.
In the past week, Lake Mary had defeated North Carolina's team 5-4, Virginia 11-1 and Georgia 7-0.
A big part of the squad has been catcher Landon Bono, who sums up the summer as "amazing."
He said his favorite moment was “probably winning states.”
To get that win for coach Jon Anderson and his team, it was Landon's swing that helped most.
“Landon to me is a complete hitter, one of the best hitters in this area,” Anderson said.
He's not a typical hitter for any 12-year-old.
Bono also competed in the Little League Home Run Derby.
It's his maturity as a hitter that helps him, his coach said.
“You can't beat him with a curveball, definitely won't beat him with a fastball," Anderson said. "He’ll put it over the fence.”
Bono's maturity and leadership have rubbed off on his whole team and given the players the mentality needed to be successful.
“They love baseball, and they wanna win," Anderson said. "They are focused, very focused.”
