SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — Satellite High school has a rich history of producing elite female athletes like Ashlyn Harris and Kelly Kretschman. The way she's going, the next name on that list could be Bria Weldon.

  • She's coached by her dad

In soccer, the objective is to score goals and Weldon has been the leading scorer for the Scorpions in her senior season.

"I love scoring goals ... and I love when the team celebrates with me," she said.

Her coaches say she has the talent to play in college, and Weldon has decided to stay in the sunshine state.

"I will be playing at Florida Southern College, it’s in Lakeland," she said. "I chose it because I got to meet the coaches and players and they were the most welcoming people ever. I knew that was the school for me."

She plans on studying to be a sports psychologist once she gets on campus.

"Being a coach's kid is mentally tough and I want to help athletes with those obstacles they may have," she said.

Satellite is coached by Ryan Weldon, Bria’s dad, who has been her coach for the majority of her life.

"I’ve been playing soccer since I was 3 years old, basically when I came out of the womb," she said.

But she says being a coach's kid has it challenges.

"It’s always been a stereotype that has been going on saying the coach's kid is on the team because your father is the coach," said Weldon. "I try to prove that stereotype wrong by showing up to every practice like it’s going to be my last."

This year’s team ended up with a record of 12-5-1 and made the playoffs. Bria said it was a pretty good year, considering the team only had one win in its first five games.

"So they started off a little rocky, we definitely came a long way and the team connection is just phenomenal," she said.
