  • He is a co-captain despite being one of the younger players on the team

He has been only playing organized basketball since the age of 10. Basketall means a lot to him, and he has plenty of motivation to succeed in the sport.

“Hopefully, I can help my family make it out from Melbourne and put them in a better place,” said Gaskins.

This past October he was one of 58 high school basketball players in the nation to participate in the USA’s junior national minicamp in Colorado Springs.

“I was around a lot of NBA scouts and college scouts,” said Gaskins.

“So he is out there playing against the elite, elite,” said his head coach Steve Henderson. “Especially at a young age, he did very well playing against kids that are heading to high-level college next year and some even further.”

While in Colorado, his leadership skills that caught the eye of NBA officials. In November, Gaskins was one of 12 high school athletes in the nation invited to the NBA court of leaders in Washington D.C.

“We had pro basketball players and mentors mentoring us about basketball and stuff outside of basketball,” said Gaskins.

“It gives him an opportunity where he has monthly calls with his mentor where they talk about life,” said Hedenderson.

“The biggest person out there was Isaiah Austin, he’s actually my mentor, and he has mentored me about a lot of things, seeing basketball to high school to college,” said Gaskins. “It was helping me become a better leader on and off the court by learning things in DC.”

Those leadership skills carry over to Holy Trinity. He is a co-captain despite being one of the younger players on the team.

“A lot of kids his age that have a lot of talent are sometimes are harder to coach,” said Henderson. “One thing that makes Caleb special that he is coachable. He puts in the work and does all the things he needs to do.”

“Just being around the game is fun,” said Gaskins.
