SANFORD, FLA – Old saying goes our best companions never have fewer than four legs. It’s never been truer for Cody Brown.

In the woods of Seminole County, you can find the 29-year old working in sync with Cayenne.

“She is very pretty and she knows it,” says Cody’s mom, Karen Wilson of Cayenne.

The 19-year old Tennessee Walker is the perfect partner for Cody since finding each other in 2014.

“They both kind of have the same momentum,” Karen says. “She’s not a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination. They have the same energy level and they work really well together.”

With hardware to back it up. This girl and her horse just came off another gold medal in Equestrian at the Special Olympics Florida State Games. Add it to an already extensive collection.

“She has a box full of ribbons and all of her medals are hanging on her door,” Karen says. “She has a lot.”

For Cody it’s not about the medals. It’s about finding something that’s hers.

Cody has developmental delay. She’s missing a piece of chromosome #7. Milestones most of us hit throughout our life; walking, crawling, talking, were delayed in Cody’s case.

Her speech is what’s most affected. Cayenne has no problem communicating with her rider.

The horse is perfectly at peace during breakfast and a 20-minute long grooming session. Easy to be content with a carrot and some mints.

After the morning routine, it’s time to practice which is work for Cody and Cayenne. For Karen, it’s everything a mother could want for her child.

“Her life could be so different if she wasn’t here and not necessarily for the best.”

The tandem practices for two events; barrels and working trail. Both a mix of speed and precision. Cody, a seasoned veteran, is in complete control proving one thing above all else about athletes with exceptionalities.

“They can do so much more than you think they can. They really can. I never expected. She caught on to this, this quick. It just makes me so proud of her.”

Opening ceremonies for the USA Games are set for 9 a.m. Sunday, June 5 at Exploria Stadium. All equestrian events will take place at Osceola Heritage Park and Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
